An Elderly Monitoring System for Seniors Saves Lives

I am interested in getting an elderly monitoring system for my elderly mother. We live in an area that tends to have many power outages so I’m worried that she won’t be protected in case of an emergency if there is no power.

Does your monitoring system have a battery backup and how will I know when it’s being used up?

Hello Rachel,

Our monitoring systems come equipped with a 24 hour backup battery in case there is a power loss or the system is accidentally unplugged. So even with a loss of power, she will be fully protected during that time.

When the system switches to battery power we will get a signal at our monitoring center to alert us. We will then call your mother and/or yourself to let you know that the system needs to be checked and tested. It’s all part of our job and one that we take pride in.

An elderly monitoring system is different than most gifts you could think to give your mother. While you might think your gift tells your mom that you care about her and want her protected, she may look at it differently. It's so important to talk to your mom before ordering an elderly call button for her. Have a conversation with her about the idea, and make sure she is open to it. Some seniors can be stubborn. If you spring this sort of thing on your mother, she may not want it… or much worse, she may keep it but not wear her button. So talk to your mom about getting an elderly monitoring system. Share with her that wearing that elderly call button is not about taking away independence, but about living independently for many years to come!

It's amazing how quickly attitudes about having an elderly monitoring system can change. I spoke with the daughter of one of our clients today. Her father was opposed to the idea of these elderly monitors, but had agreed to it reluctantly. Once the system was in his home and working he decided that he liked it a great deal. A lot of our customer's fondly refer to the "little button" that they wear. I think this fondness comes from seeing the improvements in their life from having an elderly monitoring system. Your Question:

I'm wondering how personal alarm systems connect to our existing ClearWire IP phone system? I would presume in a splitter at the back of the so-called ClearWire voice box?

I can see from your website discussions that there is some unreliability with connecting to IP phone systems that must be accepted, but am I correct that the degree of unreliability is fairly small? In other words, no systems is 100 effective.

Hi Robert,

You are correct that there are no personal alarm systems that are 100% reliable ever…we’ve had Space Shuttles explode and nuclear submarines sink…indeed they must be the highest engineered items we have ever made.

That being said your presumption is correct. What you would have to do is have a receptacle in your ClearWire system that would accept a typical male phone cord. The problem that occurs with most VOIP systems is more frequently failure of the personal alarm system to be able to speak voice-to-voice but we almost always receive the signal and are able to dispatch 911 rescue. That’s because some of the IP packets do not arrive in the order required (or not at all) therefore making the voice part more difficult.

We use VOIP in our remote offices and at times we can’t speak to each other. The worst situation with the VOIP systems are that if you lose your internet, not only have you lost it but you have lost your phone system.

To date we have identified to IP carriers that simply can’t be made to work…I suspect this is because of the poor quality noise level. These systems are BrightHouse and AT&T U-Verse and ClearWire I'm sorry to say.
