Medical Alert Issues

Using an elderly monitoring system as a preventative measure

Open

One fall can sometimes mean the difference between healthy later years and ongoing health problems. Sometimes in this great country of ours preventative medicine is a little overlooked. Getting ahead of a problem before it can really improve your quality of life though - especially with dangerous falls that seniors sometimes have! A lot of seniors end up choosing to use an elderly monitoring systems, or medical alert, only after they have already had a serious fall. It's important not to wait to long. It’s never too early to plan for a long happy life living in the home that you love so much. Home is where you should stay, and taking preventative measures like using an elderly monitoring system will absolutely help.

Does the Medical Alert always call 911?

Open
My father does fall a lot in his home, which is the main reason we want to get him a medical alert, but most of the time he just needs a neighbor or relative to come by and help him up. Is there a way we can have someone called first instead of 911 if it's not serious?

Janice
Dickinson, North Dakota

Hi Janice,

If your father presses the help button on the medical alert and requests to our operator that we call an emergency contact instead of 911 because it's not serious, we can definitely do that. We would only dispatch 911 if we don't get a response or he says it's more serious.

I hope this helps,

Medical Alert works inexpensively for both parents

Open
Medical alert devices can be used by two or more seniors in the same household. They can share the same medical alert system at no additional charge. They would each need their own medical alert pendant to wear, which is no problem, as we will give you one additional pendant transmitter for free. Sometimes either mom or dad is the one who really needs the system but the other one should wear a help button too so they can summon help if the other has an emergency. Senior Safety medical alert systems cost only $24.95 per month for both parents and the price will never be raised. We at Senior Safety respect the difficulty of living on a fixed income. We care! Talk to your mom before buying her a medical alert...

Open

It's that season again :) … Just about everyone is scrambling to find the perfect gifts for their family. But before you buy a medical alert for your mom, talk to her about the idea. I know it may give away some surprise, but it is an important step towards making sure that she will use it properly. When someone is left out of a decision that effects them directly, they can often feel disconnected from the idea. The proper use of a medical alert involves your mom wearing the help button daily. If she feels like the medical alert was forced on her it will be incredibly easy for her to simply not wear her help button, or not wear it all the time. So talk to your mom. Have an honest discussion about your concerns and her hesitation (if she has any). I hope your mom grows to wear her help button with a lot of pride!
