Medical Alert Questions and Answers

How does the Medical Alert system work ... ?

When you need help ...push the Medical Alert Button you wear. The medical alert Button (pendant transmitter) can be worn hanging around your neck or on your wrist. We feel that the medical alert necklace is safer than the wrist pendant. Both are water resistant and should be worn in the shower or tub. The pendant is 1" by 1" by a 1/4" deep...and it weighs less than an ounce.

Once the medical alert Button is pushed, it contacts a Console that you plug into your phone jack and your electrical outlet, which then calls our 24 hour monitoring center. In about 40 seconds we know that you are in trouble...and we open a Voice to Voice link...which means we can speak back and forth with you from basically wherever you are in your home without you ever touching the phone. We are talking to you through the Console. It has a very loud speaker, and supersensitive microphone. My aunt Tillie, even though her hearing is not perfect, can hear our operators around her home...and she knows if we couldn't hear her, we would assume that she is in trouble and we would send her help.

We listen to what you have to say...and then we act. Maybe you tell us that you don't want the paramedics called... "Just call my daughter, or son, or whomever..." We'll do whatever you ask us to do for you..
If we can't hear you...or if you tell us it's more serious and to "GET HELP NOW," we will dispatch your local paramedics immediately. We will continue to talk to you until help actually walks through the front door.

Then we will tell the emergency personnel ...who you are, where you are, how to gain entry to your home...if we know what the problem is... we'll tell them the nature of your emergency...and we will direct them to the "Vial of Life" for your complete medical information. The Vial tells them about your medications, dosages, frequencies, emergency numbers, etc. Whether you use our system or not, Request Vial of Life from us...this is important protection...and it's free.

Next, we call responders. These are people, friends or family, who hopefully live within five minutes of your home. We call them so that they can meet the emergency personnel at your door...that way they don't have to break in to gain access. If responders are not a solution for you...a good alternative or addition, is to use a realtors LOCK BOX that has your house key locked in it. This box can hang on your door knob or be attached to the door frame - and can't be removed...when we call the emergency personnel...we give them the combination to the lock box...and they can use the combination to get your key...and help you quickly.

During the entire process from the moment we make contact with you, until the emergency personnel arrive...we continue to remain online and talk with you...we can tell the emergency personnel what you are saying, or vice versa. You won't be alone for a moment...

Once help is on the way...another of our operators will start calling a list of your family members or friends that you have previously told us you want notified...we'll tell them just what's happening...calmly. This way you won't arrive at the hospital by yourself.

A word to the wise, whether you choose our system or another, don't let you or your loved ones live without this modern communication system. Don't wait till the problem becomes larger than necessary.

You will never have to live in fear that you can't get help...ever again.

What happens if the electricity goes out ... ?

The battery back up keeps things working without losing a beat.

The GET HELP NOW system is very sophisticated. There is a battery backup that will kick in when the power goes out, this lasts for approximately 24 hours.

Our system also calls and tells us if you have lost power or if the battery is getting low.

Our clients are always surprised when we call them to say, "You've had a power outage, we would like you to test your system"

The Button you wear also reports when it's battery is running low.

If a battery needs replacing, there is no charge, it's on us...the Old Fashioned way.

How do you get access during an emergency ... ?

There are 3 ways we traditionally get access to the house during an emergency.

1. Responders: These are friends or neighbors that live within five minutes of you, who have a key to your home. When you press the button for help, first we try to talk to you with our Voice to Voice system, then we dispatch the emergency personnel, and then we call your list of responders until we have reached someone...then they come over and meet the emergency personnel at the door so they don't have to break in. This is all set up in the computer ahead of time...we'll know just what to do.

2. Lock Box: Jeff feels that this is an excellent backup to responders. A lock box is a device that hangs on a door knob (it's locked on so it can't be removed) or gets attached to the door frame... when the emergency personnel are called...we give them the combination to retrieve the key to your home. The lock box is an additional charge of $45.00 one time. Aunt Tillie thinks the lock box is well worth the price...she says its cheaper than a door.

3. Emergency personnel are given permission to break in if no key is available. After all, what's more important...you...or the door?
