Staying Active This Winter: What Seniors Can Do To Stay Busy
November 8, 2021 by Casey in Vial of Life

Staying Active This Winter: What Seniors Can Do To Stay BusyWinter is a beautiful time of year, with the snow-covered trees and freshly white grounds. Still, as an older individual, it can be scary. Ice, snow, and colder weather increase the chance of accidents or falls, which can both ruin your day and risk injury. Don’t let that stop you from living your life, though. This guide on staying active this winter: what seniors can do to stay busy will show you some low-risk activities you can do to keep busy no matter the colder climate.

Take a Walk

Walking is one of the best low-stress exercises that you can partake in year-round. Naturally, be smart about when and where you go for your walk. Never travel in extreme weather conditions, and be careful to watch for ice or other safety hazards. Also, only walk in areas familiar to you. Your safety is the most important part of the activity. Still, if it’s a mild day and you want to roam around the neighborhood, a brisk walk while wearing a layer of cold-weather clothes will do just the trick to keep you happy and healthy.

Play With Grandchildren

Winter is also one of the best times to spend time with your grandchildren. There are many activities you can do with young grandchildren during the winter. Build snow angels, have a snowball fight, build a snow fort or igloo, go sledding, or go ice fishing. Really, it’s up to you how you want to spend the time. Take advantage of the weather and play with your little ones. Afterward, you can all head inside for a warm cup of hot chocolate and play games or puzzles for additional fun.

Join a Gym or Community Center

Another way for seniors to stay active in the winter is to join a gym or community center. Both offer hands-on activities to strengthen your physical and mental health and give you the opportunity to socialize with others. Getting older does not need to be the end of your social life. Making friends is timeless. Public facilities also tend to offer senior discounts that save you money. They have accommodations for physical disabilities, too, so even if you’re not as mobile as you used to be or live with a disability, these facilities will cater to your needs.

Wherever you go, it’s important to stay safe this winter. Senior Safety’s mobile medical alert pendant offers easy, convenient, portable medical alert protection for seniors on the go. If you decide to go out during the winter, a portable medical alert system comes in handy for any fall, injury, or accident. Simply press the button, and a dispatcher will notify medical alert personnel of your location and talk you through the situation. Help is on the way. With 24-hour coverage, seven days a week, you’re always protected.
